If you want pancakes at 3 am on a Saturday, VQ, a new restaurant on Upper Streat, has got you covered. Here’s a detailed review by Bronagh, one of the most food-loving Islington Storytellers.
VQ markets itself as a bit of everything – a café, a restaurant and a bar and is open 24 hours over the weekend.

We were greeted by a very friendly member of staff, who was more than happy to help. The place was rather quiet, especially for a Friday night, but I suspect it will pick up once it’s made its mark on Upper Street and when the word spreads. The service was impeccable all evening, and cannot be faulted at all. VQ clearly prides itself on brilliant customer service, and it really does show.
My guest and I chose a bottle of the house white, slightly on the more expensive side at £27.95 but it was delicious and we very much enjoyed it while perusing the menu and having our meals. The choice of starters was varied and guaranteed crowd-pleasers, if I was to visit VQ again I would definitely try the halloumi fries or the breaded king prawns.
On this occasion, we did have just a main. I chose the fish and chips – my ultimate favourite meal – and my guest had the steak and chips. Both meals were very enjoyable, and I absolutely must mention the brilliant mustard selection which my guest thoroughly enjoyed sampling. I turned down a dessert in favour of a margarita; I am on the quest to find the best margarita in the whole of London and this one was certainly up there on the ranks!
Overall we enjoyed our trip to VQ and would both visit again. I am confident that with more people there and perhaps later in the evening the atmosphere would have had more of a buzz. I recommend visiting for a reasonably priced casual dining experience with friends and certainly if you want to taste a gorgeous margarita!
